Former Pompey loan star Seddon makes temporary move to league rivals Dons

-

FORMER Pompey favourite Steve Seddon has joined League One rivals AFC Wimbledon.

The left-back moves to the Wombles on a seasonlong loan, having struggled to force his way into Birmingham's first-team plans once again.

Seddon enjoyed a scintillating spell at Fratton Park during the second half of last campaign.

After being recruited following injuries to Lee Brown and Brandon Haunstrup, the Reading-born ace established himself as first-choice because of his impressive displays.

Seddon's attacking performances and superb set-piece deliveries won him plenty of plaudits.

In total, he scored one goal in 18 appearances as Kenny Jackett's side’s season culminated with a penalty shootout defeat to Oxford in the League One play-off semi-finals.

Pompey were keen for Seddon to return to PO4 and enquired about purchasing him on a permanent basis.

However, the Blues were quoted a steep figure by Birmingham.

During the off-season, Brown signed a new two-year deal to extend his stay on the south coast.

Jackett also wanted another specialist left-back through the door in time for the start of the campaign.

As a result, the Pompey boss swooped for Cameron Pring on a season-long loan from Bristol City.

Seddon featured for Birmingham in pre-season but was again surplus to requirements despite Aitor Karanka taking over the St Andrew’s hot seat from Pep Clotet.

Instead, the 22-year-old has been loaned out for the fourth time in his career. Seddon returns to the Dons having helped them avoid relegation from League One during the 2018-19 season.

It means the full-back will be back at Fratton

Park when Glyn Hodges' men face Pompey on January 9. The Wimbledon boss said: ‘Steve was probably hoping to stay at Birmingham and get in the team there, but once he was told he wouldn't be in the squad he needed to get out and play. We are delighted that he has chosen to come here again.

‘He will provide energy up and down the flank. He has come in at a time when Nesta is playing well.

‘He has improved, assisted, and scored already, and we also have Paul Osew, so I have a lot of riches down that side.

‘Steve will be an added bonus down the left hand side.’
