Fan return frustration - but hope for weekend

-

Hawks expressed their 'disappointment' at not being able to welcome fans back to Westleigh Park last night.

But the club thanked the 'sterling effort' by everyone involved in the attempt to ensure supporters were allowed back in the stadium for the visit of Hemel Hempstead.

The Hawks were not granted approval by the National League for the return of fans in time for the clash - that's despite receiving the green light from Hampshire County Council's Safety Advisory Group.

In order the for the safe return of supporters, Hawks require the approval of both SAG and the National League.

Work on making sure the ground was fit for the return of fans had been ongoing since the government's announcement last week that 'elite' clubs could welcome spectators again from yesterday.

But, unfortunately for the Hawks, approval did not come in time for the visit of Hemel.

It was 'disappointing' news for the club and secretary Trevor Brock, pictured, said: 'It’s a case of saying thanks to everyone who has worked so hard in trying to get fans into the ground.

‘Everybody put in a real sterling effort and we’re now in a position to hopefully get fans in on Saturday.

‘It was very disappointing to get Safety Advisory Group approval but for the National League not to back that.’

Season-ticket holders were still able to watch the Hemel clash through the club's streaming service.

Hawks are now hoping approval for the return of supporters will be granted in time for the visit of Chelmsford City on Saturday.

Both Pompey Women and Clanfield, who are groundsharing with the Hawks this season, have welcomed fans to the ground this season before the suspension ‘non-elite’ football last month because of the nationwide lockdown.

Supporters were back in stadiums across England for the first time since March last night. They attended games in the EFL and Southport's National League North home clash against Farsley Celtic is also permitted to allow entry for a capped number of home supporters.
