Sheringham treble takes Darts back to top spot

-

Charlie Sheringham fired a hat-trick as Dartford stormed back to the top of the National League South table last night.

The son of former Pompey and England striker Teddy netted all the goals as the Darts defeated Billericay 3-0 at Princes Park.

Sheringham’s goals all came in the second half - in the 57th, 67th and 84th minutes - as Steve King’s men moved 12 points clear of seventhplaced Hawks.

Paul Doswell’s side do have six games in hand, though.

A Shaun Jeffers double saw St Albans bounce back from their first league loss of 2020/21 to win 2-0 at rock bottom Welling United.

The former Chelmsford striker took his seasonal tally to eight with a first half double as Saints jumped back into third place.

Eastbourne Borough would have knocked Hawks out of the play-off places had they avoided defeat at home to Maidstone.

But Scott Rendell’s second half goal gave the Stones a 3-2 win in Sussex that kept them in ninth place.

Ebbsfleet fell behind at home to Concord in the first minute, Alex Wall scoring.

But they hit back to win 2-1 thanks to strikes from Rakish Bingham and Adam Mekki.

Grimsby have been sanctioned by the EFL for several breaches of Covid-19 protocols, which included former manager Ian Holloway playing darts with members of his squad.

The League Two club were forced to request the postponement of three matches earlier this season.

EFL-appointed investigators found that had the club adhered to the protocols there would have been no requirement for all their players to self-isolate when one of them tested positive.

EFL chief executive Trevor Birch has written to clubs warning the competition would come under pressure from the Government to stop playing if they ‘continued to flout the rules’.

Holloway’s darts sessions took place without the board’s knowledge, Grimsby chairman Philip Day told the BBC, while it is understood the investigation also found playing staff were involved in car-sharing.
