Silverware is lifted as United end their season

-

Manager Andy Pilbury praised his Fareham United squad as they finished the season as Gosport War Memorial Cup champions.

United, who finished runners-up in the Gosport, Fareham and Solent League Division 1 this term, ran out 3-1 final victors over Lee Rangers at Lederle Lane last weekend to close the campaign with some silverware.

Second-half strikes from Stephen Scott, Sam Jacobs, pictured, and Jim Wainwright secured Fareham’s victory.

The Sunday League side played their final fixture of the season just a few days before July - and Pilbury was pleased his troops ended a ‘bitty’ season with some silverware.

He said: ‘Of course, all the council pitches are getting closed down, so it’s been a rush to get everything played.

‘Like every league, it’s just been bitty and disjointed (this season).

‘It’s just good to get it all done.’

The final was locked level at 0-0 with both sides heading in at half time still not having found a breakthrough.

Two quickfire goals put Fareham in command, but Jack Gregory struck to bring Lee Rangers back to within a goal of United.

However, they would strike again in the closing stages to ensure they lifted the Gosport War Memorial Cup trophy.

United beat CJ Glass - who beat them to the Division 1 title - on penalties in the semi-final.

And Pilbury was delighted to defeat their big league rivals and then go onto win the final.

The Fareham United boss said: ‘CJ have been the top dogs for many seasons, but we’re a relatively new team.

‘We’re giving them a run for their money, they’re beating us and we’re beating them.

‘They’re a good footballing side but hopefully we’ve got enough to consistently challenge.’

Fareham’s Gosport Memorial Cup triumph was the second trophy they had lifted this season.

United were crowned winners of the delayed Hampshire FA Sunday

League Trophy back in October.

They beat North End Cosmos 1-0 in the final.
