Perfect pets

-

I enjoy reading the Comment section of The News and read Emma Kay’s experience with the Royal python advocating how they are her “new preferred pet” and wonders ‘why more people do not opt for them as pets’ (Pythons are the perfect pets, if only you’ll give them a go… September 8).

Being both a member (and secretary) of the Portsmouth Reptile & Amphibian Society (PRAS), would also agree that Royal Pythons are a joy to own; I myself have the pleasure of owning quite an assortment of reptiles.

However, at the same time it needs to be pointed out that whilst Ms Kay suggests more people should own them as pets, it should also be taken into consideration the requirements involved in owning a snake.

Many snakes live a long time, more so than the usual domestic cat and dog so thought must be given as to future plans, feeding thawed rodents is not for everyone, suitable accommodation and accessories

and electric costs for heating and lighting should also be taken into account.

Sadly, we hear of many reptiles requiring rehoming at PRAS for all sorts of reasons, and through the club we try to help as much as we can, many of our members have adopted reptiles in need of a home because a snake was purchased and then the owner has had to rehome a few years down the line.

Owning a snake is a very long commitment and a worthy one at

that, but please please please think very hard before buying as there is always the possibility that this snake is not included in your plans 10-20 years down the line.
