MP making push against sexual violence
SEXUAL violence in war zones is an unspoken controversy that must be dealt with more effectively.
That is the message from Meon Valley MP Flick Drummond, who is asking the foreign secretary to take action.
Her inspiration for this push came from hosting a film screening of The Prosecutors
in Westminster, as part of her duties as co-chair of the all-party parliamentary group on women, peace and security.
The feature-length documentary tells the story of three dedicated lawyers who fight to ensure that rape in war is punished.
Ms Drummond said: ‘I know everyone at the viewing was deeply moved and impressed by this powerful film and some of the speakers afterwards including Nadine Tunasi who is an foreign, Commonwealth and development office survivor champion.
‘Nadine spoke about her experience as a survivor, how sexual violence is used as a weapon in war and the huge impact it has on women’s lives.
‘We also discussed how the UK Government can help victims and how there should be an international body through the UN to tackle sexual violence.
‘We will speak to the foreign secretary about work to stop sexual violence as this is one of her priorities.’
Ms Drummond added that the UK has a ‘major role’ to play.
