Rarely in your pages have I read anything so ill-informed and stupid as the letter from Jon Cole, Amateur Hour.

Yes, it was full of all the old right wing rants against the usual targets – Keir Starmer, intellectuals, the universities, the 'left wing' BBC, medics, teachers – but he then concludes with the suggestion that 'a stiff dose of Putin would alter their mindset'.

Is this the same Putin found guilty in a British court of the attempted murder of Sergei Skripal and his daughter, and the actual murder of Dawn Sturgess?

And who murders and imprisons journalists and dissenters in Russia with impunity?

Mr Cole, you should apologise to the family of Dawn Sturgess for your disgusting proposal.
