There’s no simple answer

-

I fear for the future of democracy when I see the language and vitriol aimed at politicians and the delusion that a change of government or voting system will miraculously solve deepseated long term problems.

I am reluctant to pick on one person but Joan Fryers' letter (Time for regime change, April 23) was typical on both counts added to which she seems to think she has the right to bombard them with e-mails and have them all answered as if they have nothing better to do. Other contributors to this letters page take note.

And if anyone thinks I am defending the Conservatives, if Keir Starmer and the Labour Party were in power they would be subject to the same abuse. They still are but as they are not in power they get very little publicity for it.

The current feeding frenzy attacking Boris Johnson has little to do with what's best for the country or democracy and, to me, has scary implications for the future of public office.

Joan Fryer would like to see a change of regime and a proportional representation government but no one has ever been able to explain to me how PR would make a difference.

Do we sack all MPs and have a new lot but then they would have no experience and surely a new lot would have the same range of extreme views as the current lot so they would never all agree? And do we get to vet the new lot so they are all whiter than white, happily married with two children and no skeletons?

Yes your right - I'm being ridiculous - so can we stop expecting our MPs to be saints and judge them on the job in hand and accept they are human and will make mistakes. If everyone who made a mistake lost their job we would all be out of work.

I do sympathise with Joan but the UK’s problems have no simple answers and that is true of most of the countries of the world and the blame culture is destructive.

Boris Johnson is just the latest in a long line of whipping boys and Keir Starmer should be very afraid of what he wishes for.

He may be next in line.
