THE BIG PICTURE
A citizen science project run by Buglife - the Invertebrate Conservation Trust - is asking people to count squashed insects on their car number plates. It is thought that flying bugs have declined by nearly 60% in less than 20 years. The “windscreen phenomenon” is anecdotal evidence from drivers that they collect fewer moths, flies, aphids, bees and flying beetles on windscreens than they did in the past.
