Beergate is not comparable to partygate in any way at all

-

IOr would the real sound of summer be the same five notes blaring from an ice cream van?

’ve found the whole ‘beergate’ thing to be a cynical exercise in partisan politics. Right-wing newspapers slapping it on front pages for days in the run-up to the elections in an attempt to deflect from Boris Johnson’s many deficiencies.

It is not comparable to the partygate scandals because Sir Keir Starmer wasn’t breaking rules he enforced on millions. That’s why people are angry about the Number 10 parties, because it feels like ‘one rule for us, another for them’.

Beergate does give Sir Keir one trump card. If he called the Tories’ bluff and promised to resign if he is fined - it leaves the PM in an even more precarious position. Which I would welcome greatly.
