Gosport MP pushes for action on creating positive body image
LOCAL MP, Dame Caroline Dinenage, has co-signed a pledge to national organisations in a cross-party effort towards fostering more realistic representations of body image in advertising and on social media.
The Body Image Pledge invites brands, charities, and organisations to voluntarily commit to not digitally manipulate body proportions in any promotional material.
The letter highlights the harmful effects that viewing digitally altered bodies can have on a person’s self-esteem.
Dame Caroline Dinenage MP is calling on organisations to commit to accurately representing a person’s body and make a difference in how beauty ideals are considered.
Action has already been taken by some organisations with Dove, Boots, Barry M, PureGym, and the Mental Health Foundation already signing up .
The letter, written in conjunction with Dr Luke Evans
MP, states: ‘As online campaigns run by businesses, charities, and organisations reach millions of people, we are calling for the accurate representation of body proportions of any person who appears in direct advertising or promotional material.’
Commenting on her support for this campaign, Ms Dinenage said:
‘For too long advertising & promotional images have contained digitally manipulated body proportions. Consumers can never live up to the unobtainable images of bodies online or on the pages of magazines.
‘I’ve signed a letter to nationalorganisations in across party effort towards fostering more honesty about there presentations of bodyimage in advertising and on social media .’
