A little bit of forward planning and time is what we all need

- Emma Kay

It can feel at times that our lives are a governed by a never-ending list of tasks which we forever add to a shaky ‘to do’ pile that remains in purgatory forever.

We all know that entire weekends go by and you feel like you have accomplished nothing. This can fester into a horrid numbness as there are so many ways to harness your weekend productively.

In some ways it is nice to have a weekend to yourself as you can use it to accomplish all those things it is easy to put off, especially as we are heading for a jubilee jamboree and will probably let a lot of tasks fall by the wayside.

You may want to build a barbecue, work on a car, rearrange bedding plants or do a small home project. These are all little things that can help your home feel like an extension of yourself rather than just a place in which you live.

This is why it is important to use your weekends for lifefulfilling activities rather than just let them float into nothing. Having a chunky and everexpanding to-do list of things around your home that you constantly have to walk past for months, can turn into little pieces of contention and frustration.

These little missions do not even have to take that long. I found it works well to focus on one humdrum home project that has escaped your attention for months, maybe years.

Take 10 minutes one evening to set aside a date on your calendar in which to accomplish this task and actually put it there. In writing. Mark it in. This is a very important part of the process, as it gives you the time to buy the materials you need and plan a day around your big or small venture. Then, most importantly, set aside time to reward yourself with a glass of your favourite tipple in the evening.

Giving a household project a place on your calendar will get that task done and dusted. You’ll be amazed at how quickly your to-do list vanishes when it has a definite date.

We plan outings, meetings, birthdays and even menstrual cycles around our calendar. Why do we not do the same for to-do lists? My calendar is now dotted with daily tasks and I feel so much more organised and stress free. I hope you give it a go.
