Varghese stars with bat and ball in Challenger­s success

Binish Varghese was the undoubted man of the match with a superb allround display as Solent Challenger­s defeated Purbrook 2nds in Division 4 South of the Hampshire League.

Having entered the game with HL best bowling figures of 3-15, he tore through the Kerala top order to finish with 6-31.

Ijaz Tarakhail joint top scored with 36 - there were also the same amount of extras - as Kerala reached 153 all out.

Having inflicted damage with the ball, Varghese then did the same with the bat.

A week after hitting an unbeaten78,hestruck77­as Solent won by three wickets in just 22 overs at Purbrook Heath.

Tarakhail (3-30) was, like Varghese, his side’s best performer in both innings of the game.

Kevin Hopkins tore through the Emsworth order as County Division 2 leaders Redlynch & Hale claimedath­irdstraigh­tvictory.

Replying to their hosts 202-6 total, Emsworth reached 59-1. But Hopkins, on as first change, bagged 5-32 as the visitors collapsed to 88-7.

Opener James Swaine (33) and No 9 Dan Webb (24) top scored as Emsworth were bowled out for 122.

Hayling Island are third after a 72-run win over Andover2nd­satLondonR­oad.

Electing to bat first, Hayling posted 228-6 thanks to Mike Hallett (45), Greg Chaplin (41,) Richard Poole (41 not out) and Flynn Powell (38), plus 38 extras.

Dan Holt (2-10), Dave Wayman (2-17) and Lijani Cherry (2-25) were all in the wickets when Andover were bowled out for 156.

Elsewhere in County Division 2, Ferndown Wayferers openers James Raftery and James Stephenson put on 241 in their side’s victory over Sparsholt 2nds.

Raftery was the first to go, having scored 102, with Stephenson going to hit 122 in a team total of 309-4. Sparsholt were bowled out for 180 in reply.

Spare a thought for Ferndown skipper Eric Linge. Having waited for so long to get a bat, he came in at No 3 and was promptly dismissed first ball!
