Faith In The Community Celebrating Easter with wealth of fun activities for the children

- By Becca Chamberlain

C Welebrating Easter for many families has been a joyful time of egg hunts, family get-togethers and lots of chocolate. e certainly had a great time at St Faith’s, Lee-on-theSolent. Among other things, we held a family fun day at church where more than 100 children and 65 adults joined us.

Our hall and grounds were packed with families, who experienced something of the Easter story through games, activities, songs and crafts.

It was just the latest in a series of family-oriented events we’ve hosted – this one combined Messy Church and Rainbow Toddlers activities.

The Easter Eggstravaganza involved children decorating Easter biscuits, using sponges to paint over crosses and peel off a fresh start, banging nails into a wooden cross, making a collage of the empty tomb, unscrambling an anagram egg hunt and creating an Easter garden using plants and props.

There was a junk model egg drop challenge, where the idea was for children to create a parachute and capsule that would prevent an egg from breaking.

Due to current egg shortages, we used water balloons that they had to prevent from bursting instead.

The contraptions were dropped from the roof of the church to see which would protect its fragile cargo the best. There was a baby area, and a toddlers’ playzone where preschool children could play in an enclosed area outside. Tea, coffee and cake were all provided.

It finished with everyone gathering for songs, prayers and a celebration of the Easter theme.

Families that had brought food shared picnics inside and outside church. We put on this event because we wanted to give an opportunity for children to think about the Easter story, and to celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus.

We do lots of things for children, young people and families because the good news is also for them.

We also run weekly kids’ groups at our Sunday@11 service, Rainbow Toddlers every Tuesday and a monthly Messy Church, with plenty of food, art and craft on offer. We also have numerous pop up events and courses to build community, support families and help people find faith.
