The Windsor Castle Fire: The Untold Story Channel 4, 8.15pm
On November 20, 1992, the world’s oldest inhabited castle was hit by a catastrophic blaze. Almost 21 years on from the Windsor Castle fire, this documentary draws on newly discovered footage and interviews with the firefighters to explore the battle to save the historic building. It was an epic undertaking, as 200 firefighters spent 12 hours (and more than a million litres of water) attempting to combat the flames. They speak about the tactics they used to stop the fire, as well as the race against time to rescue hundreds of priceless painting and royal treasures. There are dramatic tales of bravery, but the documentary also explores the aftermath of the disaster, including a subsequent row about funding which would have big repercussions for the royal family.
