Rival consoles – this week’s top games
Dead Island 2 PS4/5, Xbox X/S/1, PC £54.99; Age rating: 18
Set on a California forced into full quarantine after a super strong zombie outbreak, this game is a gorefest for all horror fanatics that like to smash the undead to pieces. The gameplay and story are perfectly paced, with zombies popping up at the right times, and there are plenty of different routes, side missions and survivors to keep things interesting. The story can be a little elongated, but is set in a multitude of stunning locations; jump around the Hollywood hills from mansion to mansion, then bash some zombie brains in Venice Beach. 9/10
PlayStation 4, Switch, PC £5.99; Age rating: 3
Ingenuity is the aim of the game in this simple, yet challenging, puzzle game. The plan is to usurp the monsters on the screen using whatever gadgets and tools you have to hand. With no tutorials the game is easy to understand, quick to pick up and a mix of kawaii and arcade game animations. You can rig a set of cogs and conveyer belts to run a lighter across, which then pushes the monster to its demise. Not satisfied with 200 mini-challenges? You can always make your own puzzle in the Rube Goldberg style. The only limit is yourself. 8/10
God Of Rock
PS5, PS4, Xbox, Steam, Switch £24.99; Age rating: 12
A fun twist on traditional fighting games, God Of Rock is a rhythmbased combat where players press buttons that correspond to notes appearing on-screen. The characters quickly go into fast-moving punching and kicking combos as you hit the correct notes. The game is addictive as you try to keep up with the ever-scrolling notes, thoughfocusingonthese rather than the fight can detract from the fun. As you become more accustomed to the controls and layout, focus can shift more to the battles, but the game does have a learning curve. 6/10
