Calva Louise is a truly multicultural band based in the UK. Venezuelan vocalist Jess Allanic, French bassist Alizon Taho, and New Zealander Ben Parker on drums have been creating their own brand of punkmetal mayhem since 2016.

The trio released their debut album, Rhinoceros, in 2019, followed by the ambitious concept album Euphoric in 2021. There has also been a slew of singles and EPs, collaborations, a comic book and a 45-minute hybrid movie, mixing appearances of the band with animated scenes created by Jess. As well as many gigs of their own, they have played festivals such as Reading & Leeds in England, Rock For People in Czech Republic and SXSW in the United States.

Ahead of this September’s release of their new mixtape Over The Threshold, the band have released a string of singles, including Third Class Citizen and Feast Is Over.

The latest, Oportunista is a straight-up call to action about setting boundaries and demanding respect, with the straightforward message: don't take any nonsense from anyone and stand up for yourself!

They say of the single: ‘Sometimes it becomes difficult to respond in a polite manner when you’re dealing with people that upset you. While it feels important to remember that responding with anger or aggression is unlikely to change their behavior, sometimes you can only express your discomfort by strongly setting boundaries stop being targeted.’

They play The Edge of The Wedge in Southsea on Wednesday, May 24, doors 7.30pm. They are supported by Gen and the Degenerates and TRUNC Music. Tickets £10. Go to wedgewoodrooms.co.uk.
