The Blues remained bottom of Division Three, two points behind 23rdplaced Hereford United, who had two games in hand on Jimmy Dickinson’s men.

Pompey went on to finish bottom of the table and were relegated to Division Four.

They picked up 31 points from their 42 matches, winning just seven of them and drawing 17. David Kemp was their leading scorer for the second campaign in succession, this time netting 21 goals.

Meanwhile, Pompey Youth drew 1-1 with West Ham at Eastney Barracks.

Piper said: “I am sorry about that, I still felt I could have done a job for Pompey.”

Blues manager Dickinson added: “He has given the club very good service, but the time has come to part. I don’t think he is the player he was a year or two ago.”
