Spinnaker to turn blue for World Parkinson’s Day

- Parkinson's UK Support Group Cosham

Parkinson’s is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world and there is no cure. World Parkinson’s Day takes place every year on April 11. But for the first time, the Parkinson’s community in Portsmouth are coming together to light up the Spinnaker Tower in “Parkinson’s Blue” - acting as a beacon to the almost 1,000 people living with Parkinson’s in Portsmouth and surrounding areas.

This is not only to increase awareness but to emphasise that while living with Parkinson’s is challenging, you don’t need to be alone with Parkinson’s.

Most people are shattered when their GP even suggests that they may have Parkinson’s. Then they need a clear diagnosis, medication, information and support. But, unfortunately NHS delays can mean a long, agonising wait for a consultant appointment and proper treatment, and little helpful advice. That’s when a local Parkinson’s Support Group can step in and help. Meeting others living with Parkinson’s in a friendly environment and having key questions answered, can make a crucial difference in those early days.

Portsmouth Support Groups understand that people living with Parkinson’s need to get out and enjoy life, but can find this difficult. They organise social events with others who fully understand those difficulties. There are also other activities and visits from support workers, such as Parkinson’s Specialist Nurses.

We say to anyone with Parkinson’s, when you see the Spinnaker lit up in blue, remember you are not alone.

We meet twice on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday each month, 10am-midday. at Cosham Community Centre, 1 Wootton Street, Cosham.
