Pompey aiming for fourth title in 41 years - how the others were won
Tomorrow could be the fourth time in 41 years that Pompey fans are celebrating a divisional title.
Here, we look back at how the other three were clinched - two on the final day of the season. 1983: Pompey travelled to Plymouth on the last day three points ahead of Cardiff.
While they were winning 1-0 at Home Park with an Alan Biley goal in front of thousands of travelling fans, the Bluebirds were being held 1-1 at Bristol Rovers.
Pompey’s title win was marred somewhat by regular outbreaks of hooliganism inside the ground.
2003: Harry Redknapp’s side sealed the Championship title with a 3-2 Fratton Park home win against Rotherham in the penultimate game of the season
They were also given a helping hand by Leicester, whose earlier 1-1 draw with Norwich meant a Blues victory would open up a fourpoint lead at the top with only a game to go.
Pompey opened the scoring in the 11th minute, with captain and playmaker Paul Merson netting his 12th goal of the season following a foul on Svetoslav Todorov.
Guy Branston levelled five minutes later, only for Todorov to put the Blues ahead for a second time.
Again, Ronnie Moore’s side struck back through Chris Swailes on 28 minutes.
However, that man Todorov scored from close range right on half-time to secure the points – and the title.
2017: Pompey demolished Cheltenham 6-1 at Fratton Park on the final day of the season to claim the League Two title on goal difference ahead of Plymouth, who were held 1-1 at Grimsby.
Remarkably, the Blues were only top for the final 16 minutes of the season after Devante Rodney’s leveller for Hartlepool against Doncaster.
Rodney later scored a second but Pools were still relegated while the Pompey party began, the club having now won the first, second, third and fourth tier titles.
