Foxes on the brink of top flight return as Cowley’s U’s target point

Elsewhere , Cheltenham – whose only point in first 11 games was at Fratton Park – could be relegated

Leicester City could secure promotion back to the Premier League tonight with the right combination of results, while a small slate of midweek games also sees a pair of relegation places on the line. Here, The News looks at the issues that could be decided.

Championship: The English second tier has witnessed a tense title race to rival that in the Premier League, but results last night and tonight could begin to clarify the picture.

Should Leeds have lost to Middlesbrough last night, Leicester would then have the opportunity to seal a Premier League return at the first attempt by beating Southampton tonight.

With Pompey fans no doubt desperate for Saints to stay down to ensure south coast derbies for the first time since 2011/12 next season, a visitors’ win would boost their own automatic promotion hopes should Leeds have lost last night.

League One: Cheltenham must beat Peterborough tonight if they are to take their fight for survival to the final day of the season.

The Robins, who have lost their last five home games, have done well to still be in with a chance of staying up at this stage – bearing in mind they failed to score in their first 11 third tier games of the season, picking up just one point (at champions Pompey!) during that period.

Posh could still finish second, but need to win their final two games – they host Bolton on Saturday – and hope Derby lose at home to rock bottom Carlisle. And if those three results were to happen, Posh would need to erode the Rams’ current plus nine better goal difference.

Cambridge will clinch survival either by beating Wycombe or if Cheltenham fail to win.

League Two: Just a point for Danny Cowley’s Colchester against Doncaster would see Sutton relegated with a game to spare. Doncaster, who have won their last nine matches, need just a point to leapfrog Crawley into the final play-off place. In tonight’s other game, Barrow can seal their play-off place by beating Bradford.
