Boro enter play-offs on back of beating the champions

-

Gosport Borough head into the Southern League Premier South play-offs on the back of defeating champions Chesham at Privett Park.

Five of the goals in their 4-2 success came in the first half as Boro recorded a 23rd win in their 42 seventh tier fixtures.

But a third-placed finish means they will head to Salisbury on Wednesday aiming to reach the play-off final against AFC Totton or Bracknell.

Gosport needed Salisbury to drop points at home to lowly Hanwell in order to finish third themselves and host the Wiltshire club in two days' time.

But first half goals from Noah Coppin and Josh Hedges gave Salisbury a 2-0 victory, enabling them to finish a point above Boro.

After falling behind early on, Gosport led through goals from Danny Hollands and Dan Wooden, the latter with his 18th league goal of the campaign.

Chesham hit back to level but Boro were ahead at the break thanks to a goal from striker Rafa Ramos.

Fans had to wait until the dying moments of the second half for another goal, with sub Alex Barsa netting from 25 yards.

Boro co-boss Pat Suraci said: “A strange game, with an end of the season feel. It was very open, which for the fans makes it more enjoyable.

“We were sloppy first half, a lot of loose passes, we didn’t show enough desire.

“Even though we came in 3-2 up we were quite disappointed, and we told the lads that.

“Second half we were much better, took control of the game, showed good organisation and played some really nice football.

“We created a lot of chances, it was a shame we only scored four in the end.

“We can feel happy that we’ve had a strong season and got in the play-offs, but we’re not there for the sake of it, we’re there to win on Wednesday.”

Joint-manager Joe Lea added: “It’s nice to finish on a high for the league season, it was a good performance in the second half.

“We’ve been very consistent - to not leave the top four all season is a very good achievement.”
