Permission is sought to convert former art studio into new flats
Plans to redevelop a former artist workshop/studio space into two flats have been submitted to Portsmouth planners.
Applecore PDM Limited has applied to Portsmouth City Council, on behalf of the applicant, to convert the three-storey warehouse building into a small residential development.
The building, on 114 Waverley Road in Southsea, was the home of the Southsea Workbench – a jewellery studio which offered courses to the public.
The plans, if approved, would create two three-bedroom flats on the first and second floors – with bike and bin storage on the ground floor.
Planning documents state: “The proposal aims to retain the existing structure, maintaining the character of the property.
“The conversion of the space into flats will increase residential properties in the area.
“The proposed change of use of the property as a residential dwelling would be more in keeping with the residential setting of the street which the property resides on.
“The proposed development complies with all relevant policies and would provide a high-quality addition to the area.
“The proposed works are not deemed to cause any harm to the surrounding area and are not contrary to policy. Therefore this application is believed to be acceptable.”
“The starting point for determination of this application is the fact that the authority cannot demonstrate a fiveyear supply of housing and this development would contribute towards meeting housing needs through a gain of two dwellings.”
Applecore previously withdrew plans for the site last year, which would have converted the building to form four flats and the construction of an additional storey.
So far, no members of the public have commented on the scheme, which can be viewed using the planning reference 24/00372/FUL.
