D-day poetry competition for school children

- Stephen Morgan MP

Ahead of D-day 80 commemorations in Portsmouth, Stephen Morgan MP has today launched a poetry competition for local school children to become involved in the city’s remembrance, while learning more about this pivotal part of Portsmouth’s Second World War history.

The competition is open for all Portsmouth South school students.

Winners will be picked from Infant, Junior and Secondary school age categories.

The poem can be about a person, animal, event, or object relating to the theme of D-day 80.

The City MP said the poetry competition provides young people with an opportunity to take part in honouring the bravery, sacrifice, and resilience of those who participated in the pivotal events of World War II.

The closing date for entries is Thursday May 23.

Winners will receive a small prize and their poem will be shared on the City MP’S social media on D-day.

Commenting, Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan said: “D-day 80 is an important occasion in our city, marking a pivotal moment in our World War II history, and a reminder to never forget how much we owe those who fought so bravely for our freedom.

“I want to ensure the legacy of our D-day veterans lives on in future generations, which is why I am inviting local school children to participate in honouring the bravery, sacrifice and resilience of those who risked their lives for peace, through my poetry competition.

“I look forward to reading the creative attempts to honour D-day 80 by inspiring young people in our city.”

Entries should be sent to Mr Morgan’s constituency office at 72 Albert Road, Southsea, PO5 2SL.

Please mark name, class and school on the back of each entry.
