Hammer blow as Pompey are pipped to promotion
The Pompey History Society looks back at what was making the headlines in the Sports Mail on
May 8, 1993.
West Ham’s 2-0 win over Cambridge United at Upton Park meant Pompey were consigned to the playoffs despite coming from behind to beat Grimsby Town 2-1.
A bumper crowd of 24,955 turned out at Fratton Park in the hope of cheering Pompey to promotion.
Grimsby threatened to turn the afternoon into a nightmare, however, when Tony Daws’ high hit-andhope shot found its way into Alan Knight’s net on 32 minutes.
Pompey were unable to pierce the Grimsby defence until the 55th minute when Mark Chamberlain’s cross bobbled kindly to Ray Daniel, who knocked the ball over the line.
