The Gary/Chicago International Airport Authority approved a 10-year lease Tuesday with Sage-Popovich Inc. for its $2.6 million East Corporate Hangar.

Officials said the agreement was still subject to review by legal teams from the airport and Sage-Popovich, which has operated at the airport for about 23 years, according to airport spokesman David Goldenberg.

Under the lease, Sage-Popovich will pay an annual rent of 6 percent of the overall development costs for the new hangar, estimated to be $2.6 million, plus additional expenses. Sage-Popovich is responsible all costs associated with the office buildout of the hangar.

He said the final lease cost would be calculated when the final review was completed.

The authority approved the lease with little discussion. It provides for two five-year extensions.

The new 25,000-square-foot hangar, on the far east side of the airport on Airport Road, is still under construction with a completion date expected in the first quarter of 2019.

According to its website, SagePopovich repossesses commercial aircraft. Nick Popovich, of Valparaiso, is its president. The firm has more than 100 employees, according to its website. It previously leased space from the Gary Jet Center, Goldenberg said.

“The entire Sage-Popovich flight department is thrilled to enter this new phase of our expansion with a new home at the Gary/Chicago International Airport,” Popovich said in a statement. “It has been amazing to see the growth of the airport over the past two decades and we are happy to be just a small part of that amazing transformation.”

Airport authority Chairman Tim Fesko in a statement said SagePopovich has already operated for more than two decades at the airport.

“The airport board is pleased to enter into this direct, long-term lease with the company to occupy our new East Corporate Hangar for the next decade and hopefully beyond,” Fesko said.

The authority board also welcomed new member Phil Mullins, of Gary, who replaced Ron McColly as Lake County’s representative. He was appointed by the Lake County Council.

Mullins, 68, has been involved in leadership training and grassroots advocacy efforts for more than 30 years. He has served as both an organizer and chief strategist on civic campaigns and initiatives in an array of policy areas. Mullins is retired but still serves as a consultant with New Civics Strategies LLC.
