Plenty in reserve

Mitch Trubisky resumed throwing in practice Friday for the first time since he injured his right shoulder Nov. 18, but that doesn’t mean the Bears quarterback is ready to return to game action Sunday against the Giants at MetLife Stadium.

The Bears listed Trubisky as doubtful to play in the game, making it likely backup Chase Daniel will start his second straight game.

Coach Matt Nagy said Trubisky threw only to receivers during the individual portion of drills and not during full team work, but it was enough to make Nagy feel like the “arrow’s up” on his recovery.

“It was enough to communicate with him,” Nagy said. “Giving him an opportunity to throw today and see where he's at and how he feels was the right thing to do today.”

Daniel is in line to make his fourth career start in 10 seasons. He completed 27 of 37 passes for 230 yards with two touchdowns and no turnovers in a 23-16 victory over the Lions last week, and that was without taking any full-speed practice reps. He’ll have a full week of practice under his belt this time.

“For anybody — it doesn't matter who you are, as much as you know the offense or don't know the offense — when you have reps and timing and throws it's going to definitely help you out,” Nagy said.

Trubisky said Thursday that he is trying to exercise patience and assist Daniel with preparation while he waits out his recovery.

“I definitely want to be out there for my team,” Trubisky said. “But in the meantime, I'm just trying to help in any single way I can. When I'm not out there, I think my teammates are still looking at me because I'm a leader on this team. I just try to get them going, help in any way I possibly can.”

The Bears listed defensive linemen Akiem Hicks (Achilles tendon) and Bilal Nichols (knee) as questionable. Hicks practiced in full for the first time this week after missing Wednesday and Thursday.

Nagy said he is confident in where Hicks is with his injury.

“I go back to it’s more of a precautionary thing,” he said. “It’s not significant.”

Running back

Benny Cunningham (ankle) and cornerback Sherrick McManis (hamstring) also are doubtful.
