Sail revolution

Practical Boat Owner - - Letters - Sam Longley, by email

Thank you for Ian Brown’s advice on which sailcloth would suit me and my sailing plans aboard my Hanse 311 (PBO September 2018). I do cruise single-handed but racing with crew starts in earnest next year as I didn’t manage to get my rating sorted in time for this season.

I’ve had my boat for 15 years and have just bought my third mainsail. This replaces a Hyde Marblehead racing sail, which is still OK as it is only five years old, but I wanted better.

Following discussion with Hyde I chose a radial cut sail made from a fabric called Fibrecon. It cost £3,800 – so a step above mid-range – but it is beautiful and responds well to adjustments.

I’m also on my fifth jib, a fairly heavy cruising laminate by Ultimate, chosen because of the company’s success designing blade sails for J-boats.
