Practical Boat Owner

You say potato...

-

I was most amused and occupied with October’s magazine, which travelled with me by helicopter across Saudi Arabia’s seas, where I was working on oil and gas rigs.

I particularly enjoyed Annie Hill’s winter delivery in New Zealand, and the Sketchbook ideas on ways to keep cool was a great advantage considering the location and ambient temperature that makes the British summer more like a warm bath than a heat record.

The American versus English language article ‘Say again...?’ made me giggle as we are a UK company owned by Americans and the language barrier is rarely far away: I was once even asked to ‘speak English’!

The article mentions a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI). We use RCD – Residual Current Device as the norm, but if you asked for a GFA (Ground Fault Alarm) you would get a PFR (Phase Failure Relay). A GFSP (Ground Fault Surge Protector) would be a SA (Surge Arrestor/suppressor).

These are often used on our products and can be very confusing when trying to order spares, especially when some products in the field have been there since the early 1980s.

Jubilee clips can also be known as hose ring clamps as well as hose clips depending on whether you sit in the north or the south – but all told a very good article. David Wood by email
