restrictions on ships in Fog

Practical Boat Owner - - Regional News -

Ships of 48m or longer are now not allowed to navigate in Cowes’ Inner Fairway or the River Medina when visibility is less than two cables (0.2NM).

Captains that deviate from the review order need to justify the decision to Cowes Harbour Master Capt. Stuart McIntosh. The restriction has been introduced after two incidents at Cowes involving Red Funnel ferries in fog, which resulted in moored yachts being damaged and even sunk. Vessel owners are also being strongly advised not to depart berths if visibility is two cables or less. Full details of the restrictions can be found at the Cowes Harbour website cowesharbourcommission.
