Scotland’s Stornoway Coastguard Operations Centre is trialling a new way to deliver Maritime Safety Information. The MSI radio broadcast, which is usually read out by a coastguard officer, is currently being delivered using text-to-voice technology. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said it hoped this would improve broadcast quality for mariners – but some fishermen and sailors have already complained about the ‘robotic’ voice, saying it was difficult to follow compared to a human voice. The MCA said it would be reviewing the effectiveness of the technology, and was committed to providing the ‘best service possible’.

Maritime Safety Information (MSI) may not to be delivered by officers in the future
