Vetus Maxwell Bow Pro thruster

Practical Boat Owner - - New Gear -

The basic design of bow thrusters hasn’t changed much in decades, but this new range incorporates brushless motors, plus a number of further advantages. These include proportional control in which exactly the desired amount of thrust can be applied. It’s a huge improvement on the normal crude on/off thruster controls. As long as sufficient 12V or 24V power is available, there’s (almost) no limit to how long the brushless motor can run. This has enabled Vetus to add a lock option to allow the thruster to be used to hold the boat alongside while lines are secured – a useful feature for short-handed sailing, or for those who are no longer as nimble as they once were.

Prices are considerably higher than for a standard thruster, but perhaps not out of the question compared to the running costs of most boats of the size for which a thruster would be needed. Price from £1,769.
