Next generation radar

Practical Boat Owner - - New Gear -

B&G’s new HALO radar is a pulse compression system that represents a step change in technology. It can process multiple ranges simultaneously, displaying a near-distance picture next to a long range scan. A high rotation speed of 60rpm for ranges under two miles gives an almost real-time picture, even when making a sharp turn – a classic problem with older systems when manoeuvring in close quarters in fog.

The unit can track up to 20 MARPA targets in dual-range mode and has doppler technology that colour-codes vessels whose range is reducing or extending. A further advantage of pulse compression over broadband units is that the technology is better at detecting squalls. At launch the only model available in the range is a 24in unit, but we expect the technology to be cascaded down into smaller models that will suit boats as small as 30ft.

Price: £2,770.
