PONTOONS PLANNED FOR SUNDERLAND’S RIVER WEAR
Sunderland City Council is currently in the process of awarding a contract for the design, manufacture and installation of 3m-wide pontoons at Manor Quay on the north bank of the River Wear.
Around £360,000 has been earmarked for the project, which will see either a 110m pontoon with two gangways or 70m of pontoon with one gangway on the site, depending on cost, as well as electricity and fresh water connections. There will also be a separate pontoon for canoes. The move comes after the city council identified the river frontage as a ‘prime area for recreational river activities’, especially due to its location close to the University of Sunderland. Once the pontoons are in place the university will manage them.
