In case lightning strikes twice...

-

To protect our new electronics from lightning we installed a number of devices following recommendation from an engineer friend.

For our NMEA 2000/instrument and radio/radar circuits we installed a transient voltage surge suppressor (TVSS) in each. In a lightning strike a TVSS is supposed to disconnect an electrical circuit to protect devices wired to it.

For the coaxial cable to the masthead VHF/AIS antenna, a gas-block surge protector was installed and grounded to the mast step, which was also grounded to a keel bolt with a large 2/0 AWG tinned copper cable. This is designed to divert an electrical surge to ground in case of a lightning strike.
