Organised crime links to small boats
An alert has been issued that organised crime groups may target small boats for use for people smuggling.
The National Crime Agency has warned that the number of migrants attempting to enter the UK using small boats has increased significantly since COVID-19 lockdown measures were first introduced – more than 8,000 migrant arrivals were detected throughout 2020. A rise in demand for vessels to aid migrant Channel crossings is expected as weather conditions improve.
Organised crime groups are known to target legitimate sellers of vessels and equipment such as outboard motors and lifejackets. Boats and equipment are also being stolen. Report suspicions to Crimestoppers: 0800 555 111.
