Few yachts in recent years have enjoyed such a long production run as these models, which saw sales topping 2,400 boats over a quarter of a century. Despite the different model names, all are based on the same hull, deck, appendages and rig design from Groupe Finot that originally appeared as the First 210 in 1991.

It was a radical design at the time, drawing on the knowledge that had been gained from the twin-rudder Mini 650 class, but in a detuned and easy to sail format. A near-plumb bow gives a balance between maximum waterline length and the easier motion that overhangs produce. Stability is good and sail-carrying ability impressive considering the swing keel that’s slung below the hull.

Equally, the deep (1.8m) draught with the keel lowered also helps make this a quick boat for its size upwind. Over time the design was modified to make its operation easier and to limit the potential for water ingress in extreme conditions.

Sail area is large enough to provide reasonable drive even in gentle breezes, yet a benefit of the boat’s compact size is that the rig is small enough to make loads relatively small. The headsail, for instance, is easy to sheet home even when short tacking.

In cruising mode the first reef needs to go in at around 14-15 knots of true breeze when sailing upwind, although the helm remains light. Despite the large cockpit and low-profile coachroof, the cosy open-plan interior is surprisingly welcoming, with ample sitting headroom and space for four to sit around the (optional) saloon table.
