Suzuki Ignis 1.2 Dualjet Hybrid Allgrip SZ5

-

TOW CARS DON’T come much smaller than the Suzuki Ignis. At 3.7m long (34cm shorter than a Ford Fiesta), this is also a featherweight tug, with a kerbweight of just 920kg for the 1.2 Dualjet Hybrid Allgrip. But tow it can – legally up to a tonne, although staying within the 85% match figure of 782kg is more sensible. That makes it suitable for the likes of the pre-2018 Go-pod, or a Freedom Microlite Discovery. Despite the stick-thin kerbweight, this version is four-wheel drive. That helps the Suzuki to put its power to the road in wet conditions, and will be a plus if you need to tow your micro-caravan or trailer tent away from a muddy pitch. Power is from a petrol engine, assisted by a ‘mild’ hybrid integrated starter generator (in effect, a small electric motor that assists the engine, but doesn’t directly power the wheels). There’s no need to plug the car in: the Dualjet powertrain recharges while coasting or braking, which helps to achieve 60.1mpg on the combined cycle. There’s just 89bhp and a modest 88lb ft of torque. However, given the car’s size and weight, it’s surprisingly lively in solo driving. You couldn’t call it quick, but it’s as eager as a puppy chasing a ball. It yaps almost as loudly, with lots of engine noise when accelerating and whining while slowing. The terrier impression continues on country roads, where the Ignis is willing and nimble. Around town, it’s happy to slot into the smallest gaps, while light steering makes for easy parking. Inside, there’s not a huge amount of space, but tall drivers should be able to find a comfortable driving position. Rear legroom is acceptable, although the Ignis is narrow, with only two seatbelts in the back. To make the cabin as large as it is, boot space has been compromised: there’s just 204 litres with the back seats upright. Build quality is disappointing, with hard, shiny plastics and a flimsy feel. However, you do get some high-tech driver aids as standard, such as autonomous emergency braking. Keyless entry and start, a rear-view camera, climate control, DAB radio and sat nav are included in the price of just £15,499.
