Mazda CX-5 2.2D 184PS AWD Sport Nav+ Auto

-

MAZDA HAS UPDATED the CX-5 SUV, although you’d be hard pressed to tell. There’s no change to the outside, beyond a new design of alloy for the Sport Nav+. Headline news is the introduction of a petrol automatic model, the 165PS (163bhp) 2.0-litre. Previously, if you wanted a petrol engine, you had to change gear for yourself. With a kerbweight of 1635kg, the petrol auto has an 85% match figure of 1390kg, well within the 2000kg legal towing limit. But we still rate the diesels as the ones to choose for regular towing, especially the full-fat 2.2-litre diesel AWD. Power has been uprated from 175PS (173bhp) to 184PS (181bhp), with 328lb ft of pulling power. That equals or betters most rivals. For a mid-sized SUV, the CX-5 diesel has a healthy kerbweight: the auto that we drove weighs 1820kg. The 85% match figure is 1547kg; the legal maximum, 2100kg. We also spent some time in the less powerful two-wheel-drive diesel, with 150PS (148bhp) and 280lb ft of torque. It’s clear from the driver’s seat that this version isn’t as fast, but it’s still a lively and sporty SUV. The lower kerbweight (1730kg for the manual) no doubt helps, although it does narrow down the range of suitable matches. Other changes concern standard and optional safety equipment. Every CX-5 now comes with Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic alert, Smart Brake Support, High Beam Control and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning. The optional safety pack on Sport Nav+ models features a 360˚-view camera and Adaptive LEDS. Otherwise it’s very much a case of not fixing what wasn’t broken. The car still rides and handles extremely well, with a firm but supple approach for stable towing. The steering is light but precise, making this one of the most enjoyable mid-sized SUVS to drive. Inside, there’s enough space for adults to be comfortable front and rear, and a practical boot. Pricing remains competitive, starting at £24,795 for the most affordable petrol and rising to £34,395 for the range-topping diesel.
