WHEN TO GO
We went in late September, when the weather is still warm, but the region is not busy in terms of tourism.
Any time of year is fine, as long as you can find a site that is open.
Amiens has events all year round, including a festival of street arts in June and an international film festival in November. During the summer months, the exterior of the cathedral is illuminated at night.
WAY TO GO
We travelled across the Channel with DFDS Seaways ferries (www. dfdsseaways.co.uk) from Dover to Calais. It’s worth paying the extra £12 per person to use the Premier lounge, where you can help yourself to free coffee and tea, or a glass of Prosecco. Comfort, space and newspapers are also on offer.
In addition, we took advantage of the priority boarding system, which meant we were among the first to disembark, too.
FOOD AND DRINK
In Amiens, head for Quai Bélu for a wide variety of riverside eating places and bars. We also enjoyed a meal at Chez Rosa, a pizza restaurant on Rue Flatters.
In Albert, we stopped for coffee at Le Hygge Restaurant Brasserie on Place d’armes.
