When to go
I visited in August, although outside hotspots such as Tintagel and Fowey, the countryside wasn’t as crowded as I had feared. There were still plenty of places were I could enjoy solitude. As long as you aren’t necessarily bothered about going for a dip, Cornwall is great at any time of year. You can certainly be surprised at how warm it can get, even in shoulder season.
Way to go
This trip settled a question for me: the M3/A303 route for getting to the South West from the Home Counties is definitely quicker than taking the M4 to Bristol and turning left. For those from other areas, Cornwall is always going to be quite a schlep down the M5, and then onto the A30. The latter remains a dual carriageway until well into Cornwall itself.
Food and drink
It’s in the middle of touristfocused places, but I liked the King Arthur’s Arms in Tintagel, and the German family sitting next to me seemed to be having a great time with its seaside pub grub. The food at the Wellington Hotel in Boscastle was first class, and for lunch I particularly enjoyed No 4 Honey Street in Bodmin. Just about every little Cornish town has a cafe, but I particularly liked The Cornish Bakery in
Fowey, part of a chain. Finally, the Cornish pasties at Slice Tintagel are exquisite.

Where we stayed
Trewethett Farm Caravan and Motorhome Club Site This is the kind of site that makes you wonder why everyone doesn’t go caravanning. Its 128 touring pitches all have direct views onto Bossiney Cove and, beyond that, to the rocky headland that is the beginning of Tintagel. The site, which is open to nonmembers, is also easy walking distance to both Tintagel and Boscastle.
The staff could not be more helpful, and while the toilet blocks are utilitarian they are perfectly adequate, with no code for entry. There is also a little shop, a small car park for visitors, and a bay for early arrivals.
