SEPTEMBER

Following on from the success of the North Coast 500 and North East 250 touring routes, Scotland has come up with a new route taking you through the heart of the country.

Heart 200 is a circular route encompassing Perth, Stirling, The Trossachs and Highland Perthshire, and two National Parks, Loch Lomond and The Trossachs, and the Cairngorms.

The route is divided into six sections, which you can tackle one at a time if you just want a short break. The Wooded Western Edge takes you from Stirling to Killin via the eastern side of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.

The Highland North runs alongside stunning Loch Tay from Killin to Aberfeldy, then up to Tummel Bridge, through Tay Forest Park and along Loch Tummel, and up to the southwestern edge of the Cairngorms, finishing at Pitlochry.

The Riverside East takes in the Tummel, Braan, Ericht and Tay rivers. At Loch of the Lowes Nature Reserve, you might be lucky enough to spot ospreys, red squirrels and beavers.

Explore the city of Perth before moving on to the Historic South route, winding its way past Loch Leven and the Gleneagles Hotel to Crieff and Comrie. The route finishes at the great city of Stirling.

Have you ever fancied the idea of crafting your very own surfboard or paddleboard?

Now you can learn how from master craftsman James Otter, at The Good Life Experience, a festival taking place on the Hawarden Estate in Flintshire.

Other events include music, talks, 20 expert chefs cooking over eight different campfires, free classes taking place in two craft tents, foraging in the forest, wild swimming in the lake, a dog show, and wellness activities. There is camping for caravans, with showers and toilets, but no electric hook-up.

The campsite area is strictly pedestrians only – car parks are a five- to 10-minute walk from the site. The festival website also suggests alternatives for camping. Find out more by visiting www. thegoodlifeexperience.co.uk.

Heritage Open Days go behind the doors of some of England’s extraordinary architecture, in places not normally open to the public and with events that celebrate community and local stories.

Mindful of the problems of 2020, the organisers are keeping a keen eye on the Government guidance, but are determined to lay on suitable events.

This year’s theme is Hidden Nature. We’ll also be monitoring what is being planned; if you want to find out more, visit www.heritageopendays.org.uk.
