We look at major UK driving routes and reveal everything you need to know
THE A14 RUNS from Felixstowe in Suffolk for 127 miles (204km), passing through Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire to the Catthorpe Interchange at the southern end of the M6 and junction 19 of the M1 in Leicestershire.
From Felixstowe, it bypasses Ipswich, going on to Stowmarket, Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket, Cambridge, past St Ives, Huntingdon and Kettering, to end at junction 19 of the M1 and the start of the M6. It is the road to everywhere for container lorries disembarking at Felixstowe, the UK’S principal container port, linking with the A1, the M1 and the M6 to head north, south and west.
Historic market towns
From the roundabout at Trimley, the A14 heads west, over the River Orwell, bypassing Ipswich and on to Stowmarket, home to the Museum of East Anglian Life. Woolpit, with its timber-framed architecture, is worth a visit before you reach Bury St Edmunds.
The A14 continues west, bypassing Newmarket, Cambridge and the historic market town of Huntingdon, Oliver Cromwell’s birthplace. The road also connects Thrapston and Burton Latimer before arriving at Kettering. To the north-east of Kettering is the splendid Boughton House, aka the English Versailles.
The market town of Rothwell is next as it continues through Northamptonshire, then past Naseby, where the Parliamentarians won a decisive victory over the Cavaliers in the English Civil War. It ends where the M6 begins at the intersection on J19 of the M1.
