MY SEALS ARE ESCAPING

-

QDuring a recent overhaul of my Fiesta MKII, I noticed the valve stem oil seals had slipped off the valve guides. There doesn’t seem to be anything to hold them. Is something missing? paul Farnfield, Ashtead

AThe valve stem oil seals should be a tight sliding fit on the tops of the valve guides. The rubber goes hard over time, which is probably why they’ve slipped off. Treat it to a new set. Their lifespan is usually about five years or 50,000 miles. You’ll probably see a significant reduction in oil consumption.
