Water power

- Les Brooksbank, Bradford, W Yorks Ed: Has anyone done anything like this on a classic?

I found the responses to your ‘Quick Posts’ question, ‘Will electric cars take over in 2025?’ (PC, July, 2017) very interesting. However, there was a glaring omission by your respondents. It is, to my mind, the half-way house of fuels – this being hydrogen.

A hydrogen-fuelled internal combustion engine emits zero CO2, as the exhaust gas is steam, and minimal NOX when compared with other engines. In addition, a hydrogen engine is based on internal combustion engine technology, which would suit classics perfectly as maintenance procedures would remain basically the same and your vehicle would still be able to run on petrol – although this would not be necessary if an electrolysis unit were utilised, as this would produce a constant flow of hydrogen. Of course, modifications will be expensive but with ever more stringent emissions controls, the expense may well be worth it.

?? ?? Hydrogen could rival electric power, says Les.
