Practical Classics (UK)

Dose of imperfection most welcome

- Matt Neale, Sheffield

I love PC and I have subscribed for years. However, there is one aspect of your features on reader restorations. Often, in reference to the restorer’s background, it is stated they had career in engineering, metal fabrication or motor mechanics.

Personally, I had never picked up a spanner in anger before embarking on my Triumph Herald resto. Nevertheless, I have completed a nut and bolt restoration. Yes, the car has been painted by brush (although you have to get close to notice).

It cost £300 to purchase and probably did not cost any more than £1500 to restore in total. I’ve learned many skills and made so many mistakes over the years it was off the road but it is a truly practical classic.

I’d like to see stories where chrome is pimpled with scars, paint has a bit of cellulite and seats still sag a little. It might give us all a little boost.

?? ?? There is no shame in imperfection, says Matt.
