The word’s out

Fewer bargains as modern classic prices pick up

-

While the firm has been establishing its new brand, Brightwells’ modern classic sales have provided rich pickings for bargain hunters. However, word seems to have got around and at its most recent sale, on June 22, the percentage sold and prices achieved were both up. And not many ‘big grin buys’ snuck under the radar.

On the other hand, sellers will have been pleased by some of the results, like the surprising £4926 paid for a 1986 Nissan 300ZX Targa. This was full-on Eighties nostalgia with its very period dark blue over silver paintjob. Only 52,000 miles on the clock, too. The auto ’box would usually detract punters but this was way up on its

£3250 top estimate. It was also interesting to see a not-perfect ’87 Fiesta XR2 sell for £8064 – also almost 50 per cent over its high estimate.

At least there was one bargain that some readers will be kicking themselves for missing: a three-owner 1991 Saab 900i 16v. So not a Turbo, but it was the prettier three-door model and had only done 62,600 miles, with just 6000 of those in the last ten years. It needed some elbow grease to bring it up to level, but offered at ‘no reserve’,

£1344 looked like money very well spent.
