The old chuffer
1972 Triumph 2000 Engine 1998cc/6-cyl/ohv Power 84bhp@5000rpm Top speed 98mph Fuel economy 25mpg Work since last report Exhaust gasket replaced and carbs cleaned.
Until the Jensen is finally complete my Triumph 2000 is the front line ‘proper classic’ in the fleet. ‘Harold’ (my grandfather’s name… it was his car from new) has proved entirely dependable even when not started for weeks on end.
I deconstructed the twin Stromberg carbs over winter to degunk float valves and I have kept on top of tuning and oils. A visit to the wizards at Moordale Motors in Potters bar saw the exhaust gasket replaced without stud destruction. Thanks to Dale again – apart from that, it has seen many trouble free miles.
Included in these miles was a visit to the home of Adrian Shooter in Oxfordshire. Like myself he is a classic car enthusiast and steam train addict. So addicted is he, in fact, that he has built a lifesized replica of the Darjeeling and Himalya Railway, in his back garden!
The railway is complete with its own working steam locomotive, an original D&HR saddle tank restored a few years back by Bob Meanley at Tyseley works. It runs in a figure of eight and when in use, the in-field is filed with classic acrs. The perfect day out… you’ll see why I was there in news.
I also gave Mark Wilkinson, boss of Heritage Insurance a go in the 2000 recently. Find out why at ‘Mark’s Marques’.
