GT6 is nearly finished

-

1972 Triumph GT6 Engine 1998cc/6-cyl/ohv Power 98bhp@5300rpm Fuel economy 27mpg Work since previous report

Ready for engine overhaul.

Fitting a new gutter to the offside screen pillar and the finishing strip to the roof seam above the windscreen completed repairs to the main bodyshell. Now Jamie at Complete Car Care has smoothed in all his repairs with a skim of filler, the shell is looking very sound indeed.

That means we still have to repair the onepiece front end, doors and tailgate. The doors don’t look too bad and shouldn’t need much work. The bonnet has a few of the usual Spitfire and GT6 issues though, with a little rust on the wheel arches and a hole high up on the offside wing. Typically for these one-piece Triumph fronts, there are stress cracks starting from the headlight mountings. Jamie plans to weld up the cracks and do a neat little reinforcement job in these vulnerable areas – more on this next time.

The tailgate is more problematic. The original has rusted around the lip where the outer panel is pressed over the frame, in the way that folded seams retaining door skins often rot. GT6 tailgates are like the proverbial hens teeth but I think I’ve found a good secondhand replacement. All being well, that completes the panel work repairs.
