JOINT PAINS

-

QMy 1987 Citroën ZX has started making a loud clicking noise when turning sharp corners, especially while accelerating hard away from junctions. What’s wrong with it? Gerry Unstead, Middlesbrough

AThe constant velocity (CV) joint on one or both of the driveshafts is making this noise. The CV joint consists of hardened steel balls running in channels in the two halves of the joint. If the grease has dried out or escaped due to a torn dust boot, the balls bind and clicking is the result. If it’s only just started, you might get away with repacking the joint with molybdenum disulphide (or ‘CV joint’) grease. If the components are worn or damaged, however, the joint will have to be changed. Complete new ZX driveshafts are available from motor factors and ebay from £30.

?? ?? CV joints are pretty hardwearing, but they don’t last forever.
